Wife and children
Philip was born on 13 October 1931 in Laingsburg. He was the youngest of ten siblings. His mother was one of the last Voortrekkers and gave birth to at least one child whilst the trek moved through Die Hel towards Beaufort West and finally Laingsburg.
Philip was much younger than his siblings and had a very solitary childhood, relying on his vivid imagination to keep himself occupied while his parents were busy on the farm. He loved playing shopkeeper and office worker. He had a love for pens and writing and collected fountain pens throughout his life. He also loved cooking, especially making soups and baking bread.
He loved being well dressed and we used to comment that he should have lived in an earlier era, when men could wear powdered wigs and high heels.
Philip looked for adventure and consequently moved around every few years, seeking new jobs and opportunities, which ranged from farming to brick making, being a caretaker, and working for many companies. He was happiest when reading a book and having a cup of tea, with one of his bull terriers at his feet.
He married Judith in 1953, they had 6 children together, and she sadly passed away just after their 60th wedding anniversary. Philip met his second wife, Alna, shortly afterwards, his companion for the next 12 years.
Philip leaves 4 children, 11 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
