Donell Charles “Don” Tarloff
12 May 1954 – 16 August 2023
Donell Charles Tarloff, fondly known to everyone as Don, was born on 12 May 1954 in the East London area. He grew up on a farm, where he learned the value of hard work, determination, and independence from a young age. Later, Don moved to East London to attend school, where he stayed in a hostel during his school years.
After completing school, Don joined the South African Army, where he developed discipline and resilience that would shape his future career. In later years, he began working at Woolworths as a trainee manager. This role sparked his passion for business and entrepreneurship.
A few years later, Don opened a Wimpy restaurant in George, where he quickly built a reputation for excellence. Under his leadership, the restaurant won numerous competitions and earned several overseas trips, being recognized as one of the best Wimpy restaurants in South Africa. Those who knew Don understood that he was never afraid to think outside the box. It is said that Wimpy added steak to their menu thanks to Don’s initiative—he believed that when he saw an opportunity, he should take it, even if it meant bending the rules.
After selling the Wimpy, Don continued his entrepreneurial journey by starting his own ice cream factory, along with ice cream combis that travelled to shows and events. This is where he earned the well-known nickname “Don the Ice Cream Man.” He became instantly recognizable in town by his unique dressing style—long shorts, white socks, and his unmistakable presence, which made him a familiar and beloved figure wherever he went.
Don made history as the first vendor to operate at Victoria Bay, starting with a combi before eventually building a kiosk. Over time, that kiosk grew into a restaurant, becoming a landmark at Victoria Bay. Even today, when people speak about Victoria Bay, Don’s name is often one of the first to be mentioned.
For more than 40 years, Don travelled the roads, attending shows, festivals, and functions, steadily building a strong and respected name for himself and his business. To Don, it was never just about business—the people he met along the way became like family. Some loved his strong personality, others found him challenging, but his true friends knew that they could always rely on him. Don was known for his generosity and willingness to help—he would give his last to someone in need.
A very important part of Don’s life was his wife, Jeanette Tarloff. Although Don could sometimes drive her mad, they shared a deep understanding and strong partnership. They knew each other so well that often one would know what the other was thinking before a word was spoken, especially when it came to new ideas and plans. Together, they supported one another through the many adventures and challenges of life and business.
Don’s greatest pride and joy, besides his loyal companion Molly, his beloved dog and partner on many journeys, were his four children: Deborah, Tammy, Darren, and Jody. He loved his family deeply and worked tirelessly to provide for them and build a legacy they could be proud of.
Don’s life ended too soon on 16 August 2023, but his legacy lives on through the businesses he built, the people he inspired, and the countless memories he created. Many admired his incredible energy and determination—even in his later years, few younger people could keep up with Tarloff.
Don will always be remembered as a hardworking pioneer, a fearless entrepreneur, a loyal friend, a devoted husband, and a loving father. His name and spirit remain part of the communities and people whose lives he touched.
