“Do what is right, even when no one is watching.”
Johannes van Wyk was a pillar of strength and quiet wisdom in our family, a man whose presence brought calm and reassurance wherever he went. Known lovingly to everyone as Oupa Hennie, he lived his life with integrity, patience, and a deep respect for others. He believed strongly in doing things properly, taking responsibility for one’s actions, and showing kindness through consistency rather than grand gestures.
Family was always at the centre of his world. He took great joy in seeing everyone gathered together, especially during long Sunday lunches that stretched into the afternoon, filled with conversation, laughter, and shared stories. He had a way of listening that made people feel truly heard, and his advice, though often simple, carried a lifetime of experience behind it.
Oupa Hennie found peace in routine and purpose. He worked steadily, fixed what was broken, and never wasted anything that could still be useful. His stories, often shared casually, were filled with lessons about resilience, humility, and perseverance. He taught us that a good life is built quietly — through showing up, keeping your word, and caring deeply for those entrusted to you.
Though he is no longer with us, his influence remains woven into the fabric of our family. His values, his patience, and his unwavering sense of right and wrong will continue to guide us for generations to come.
